What is a Movement?

Our task is ongoing, for each generation needs to be reached for Christ anew and taught to pass their faith on to others. We believe this can best be done through building movements everywhere. Therefore, our vision is clear: We want to be used of God to help build movements everywhere, so that everyone knows someone who truly follows Christ. Movements go beyond organisational boundaries and controls; they are made up of enthusiastic people who unite around a compelling, God-given cause leading to God-empowered growth.

Steve Douglass, international president of Campus Crusade for Christ, defines spiritual movements as:

“...groups of people who band together to win, build and send in the power of the Holy Spirit. . . . Spiritual movements consist of spiritual people who love God and love one another and non-Christians as well. These are true followers of Jesus who have picked up the banner of the Great Commission and share the message of God’s love and forgiveness to all around them.”

In short, we would define a movement as a group of people who consciously, and at their own cost, connect to change the status quo. We think these kinds of movements are to have the following characteristics:

  • Spirit-empowered: Extraordinary prayer comes first, for only God can produce spiritual movements. We must exercise supernatural faith, believing God for the impossible.

  • Inspirational leadership: Behind movements we find leaders who are bold, passionate and committed.

  • Momentum: A movement takes on a life of its own, with spontaneous, contagious growth. Large numbers of volunteers and partners want to get involved, and it expands beyond the boundaries of Agape.

  • Compelling cause: The cause inspires passion and intrinsic motivation.

  • Evangelism: The gospel spreads through continuous evangelism and broad sowing, connecting to hearers in a relevant way.

  • Spiritual multiplication: Evangelism leads to building and sending; people are trained for a lifetime of involvement; strategies and tools are simple.

  • Belonging and ownership: Movements are made up of people who are valued and who become part of a community, who participate in team relationships.

  • Spiritual fruit: Lives are being changed and society is being influenced.

  • Capacity: Movements are supported by an operating system that integrates and connects. New capacity is generated as the movement expands.
